Kairon Bullock

Could you tell us a bit about your work at the Phoenix? What does an average day look like? What are you learning?

We always start with using the script to focus our lights and create general looks for each scene. Then as rehearsals go on we work with the director to add extra elements to really bring each scene to life. I've had the opportunity to work alongside other light designers and learn their approach to different kinds of shows, as well as lots of new skills I can use when designing other shows.

What have been the most valuable parts of this experience for you so far?

I've really appreciated getting to work with more experienced designers and getting to learn from them. Both Laura and Tim have showed me a lot since I started working at the Phoenix.

How has working at the Phoenix been different from your other experiences in theatre?

The biggest difference I've experienced is not actually running the show during performances. I'm used to being the board operator as well, but it's been nice to be able to actually sit in the crowd and enjoy the shows.

Could you see yourself staying in lighting design as a long-term career? If not, what do you hope to do instead?

I would absolutely love to be able to do theatre full time, though I don't think I could commit to just one area. I really enjoy light design but I also like working on sound and building sets.
